Nagalkeni villagers hold protest seeking closure of Tasmac outlet

According to the residents, the stretch between GST road signal and Thiruneermalai already has three Tasmac outlets.

Chennai: High tension prevailed near Pammal coming under Pallavaram constituency, as residents from Nagalkeni village held a novel protest on Sunday urging the authorities to remove the Tasmac outlet.

According to the residents, the stretch between GST road signal and Thiruneermalai already has three Tasmac outlets. One more outlet was being set up angering local people, who already faced disturbances from inebriated people.

Police said residents along with school children, holding liquor bottles, assembled near the new outlet and poured liquor out to show their opposition.

Residents also said that Nagalkeni was a congested place and a government school was also functioning in the locality. Moreover, since more women were
working in the school, they felt uncomfortable whenever they were on the way to school or homes.

“These outlets are functioning round the clock against the law and clients always create a ruckus. So, women are always afraid of such nuisance,” said a villager.

Worse still, more persons, after buying liquor bottles, find public places to consume alcohol and they pass lewd remarks on women and others, the
villagers added.

Despite repeated complaints to remove the Tasmac outlets from this area, nothing was down, they said. Upon receiving information, Pallavaram police reached the spot and assured the people about the outlet. A senior official from Pammal said that they would look into the matter.

“Since we have no authority to remove Tasmac outlet, we will inform to the concerned officials about the protest,” the official said.

It may be noted that a series of protests was held in suburbs in the recent past demanding closure of Tasmac outlets.
