Road link to old Amaravati cut between Vijayawada and Old Amaravati on Friday.

Guntur: Kondaveeti Vagu, often called the ‘Stream of Sorrow’ has started overflowing at Peda Madduru, cutting off the road link between Vijayawada and Old Amaravati on Friday.

This road is the only link between old Amaravati and Vijayawada, the temporary Secretariat at Velagapudi, Uddandarayunipalem, Tullur and other villages of the Amaravati core capital and the capital region.

Peda Madduru had been demanding solution to the problem since decades, and their pleas for construction of a high-level bridge has been in vain.

APSRTC was forced to cancel services to old Amaravati; all buses will halt at Peda Madduru till the water recedes. A tributary of the Kondaveeti Vagu, which merges into the Krishna river at Peda Madduru, is swollen following heavy inflows from upland areas.

The swollen Kondaveeti Vagu is also leaving residents of various villages in the Amaravati capital region worried; though the situation is not as dire and Velagapudi, Tullur and other villages of Amaravati capital region not yet cut off from the world.

All India Pachayat Parishad national secretary Jasti Veeranjaneyulu said road link being severed during heavy rains and floods is a common occurrence for Peda Madduru residents.

“Floodwater form Yeddu Vagu, Mella Vagu and other streams flow into the Kondaveeti Vagu and this ‘Sorrow of Stream’ lives up to its name every year, cutting off old Amaravati and surrounding villages from Vijayawada,” he said.

The villagers had petitioned TD chief N. Chandrababu Naidu in 1999 when he visited Peda Maddur in the capacity of an Opposition leader.

The TD president had promised a high-level bridge if the TD came to power.
Mr Veeranjaneyulu said that there was no other way to reach the temporary Secretariat at Velagapudi, Vijayawada, Amaravati core capital and other areas apart from the road.
