Five New District Medical Officers Appointed to Enhance Medical Services in Hyderabad

The newly announced DM&HOs will be located in Charminar

Hyderabad: The state government on Wednesday took a major step towards strengthening healthcare delivery in Hyderabad with the health department announcing that the city will have an additional five district medical and health officers (DM&HO), taking their strength to six.

Health minister T. Harish Rao said that as per Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao’s directives, the health department formed a special committee to reinforce the Directorate of Public Health. Wednesday’s orders, announcing the new positions, marks the start of a systematic rationalisation of human resources within the directorate, ensuring appropriate medical staff allocation based on patient needs, he said.

The newly announced DM&HOs will be located in Charminar, LB Nagar, Serilingampally, Kukatpally, Khairatabad, and Secunderabad GHMC zones. The new additions take the total DMHOs in the state to 38.

Harish Rao also said that the government was reorganising 636 primary health centres to ensure uniform distribution of resources with PHCs sanctioned in the newly formed 40 mandals, while PHCs in 30 mandals have already been upgraded to hospitals, with community health centres (CHCs) previously overseeing outreach activities.

To strengthen the 235 urban primary health centres (UPHCs), additional staff is being recruited, along with several steps taken to ensure better use of existing healthcare staff across the state.
