COIMBATORE/TIRUCHY/ THANJAVUR/SALEM: Security has been stepped up in the textile city of Coimbatore following a terror alert for the city. This follows a military intelligence report that a strike group of LeT men in disguise from Sri Lanka are bound for Coimbatore, the city police commissioner Sumit Saran, confirmed to reporters on Friday. The entire city of Coimbatore has come under a heavy security blanket.
In Thanjavur, police registered a case after two junior ASI officials gave a complaint that when they were on duty at the Big Temple in the town, around 11 am, they spotted a helicam which filmed the entire temple complex, flew southwards (towards Sri Lanka) and became invisible. As there is every likelihood of danger to the temple, police should find who filmed the temple, they said.
At the Stanley reservoir in Mettur near Salem, following the state-wide alert of LeT terrorists sneaking in, Tamil Nadu police bomb detection and disposal squad men swung into action and inspected the walls of the huge reservoir at Mettur, as a precautionary measure.
In Nagapattinam, police took into custody a middle-aged man at Nagore Bazar area seen moving around in suspicious manner. The suspect, one Abudaheer, said to hail from Devipattinam in Ramanathapuram district, is alleged to be staying in Nagore as a mobile phone service personnel. Varadarajalu, IG, Central Zone, Tiruchy, DIG Thanjavur, Loganathan, Nagai SP, T.K. Rajasekharan, personally supervised all vehicles entering Nagapattinam district today.
