Bengaluru: Bescom to take underground route to cut power outages
Bengaluru: The Bescom will soon be inviting tenders to carry out underground cable laying work in the City.
According to Bescom sources, laying of underground cable totaling 18,000 km will begin once the tender is issued and finalised.
Out of the 18,000 km, around 12,000 km will be of low tension cable while the remaining 6,000 km of cable to be laid will be of high tension.
A senior officer in Bescom said, “Various officials and departments in Bescom are working on the terms of tender and it will be floated at the earliest. Simultaneously, a recce will be carried out to identify the suitable places to carry out the underground work in the City. Our priority is to ensure that the work is completed at a quick pace and also at the earliest.”
“The state government has also been informed about the project and financial assistance sought. Laying underground cables will help in reducing the maintenance cost when compared to the maintenance of aerial cables. There will be a decrease in damages to wires and electrocution incidents once the wires go underground,” added the officer.
Another officer said work will be carried out in a phased manner. “We will also co-ordinate with the BWSSB and BBMP to ensure that while digging up to lay cables, we do not come in contact with pipes or other optic cables.”
“We have been told that the tender will be floated soon and work might begin in a few months’ time,” added the officer.
