Tamil Nadu government gets serious on 2019 plastic ban
Chennai: Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Thursday launched a plastic pollution-free Tamil Nadu and his government also made popular actors - Vivek, Suriya, Karthi and actress Jyothika, as brand ambassadors.
He also launched an exclusive web portal: www.plasticpollutionfreetn.org and a mobile application, on the occasion, as part of an effort to stop use of plastics in Tamil Nadu from January 1, 2019. Short films to promote recycling plastic waste were also released.
Participating in the function held at the State Secretariat here Mr. Palaniswami said “for a healthy Tamil Nadu, people should stop using plastics as it affects the environment.” People should instead use bags made of cloth or biodegradable material.
Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam and Chief Secretary Girija Vaidhyanathan were also present on the occasion.
The brand ambassadors for the campaign - actor and social activist Vivek, Suriya, Karthi and Jyothika, will carry forward the message of converting TN plastic pollution-free by highlighting the ill-effects of plastic. The initiatives are in accordance with the State government’s announcement coinciding with the world environment day on June 5, to ban the use of plastics including non-biodegradable carry bags, from January one, 2019, in order to gift a plastic-free State to posterity.
A week ago, the Greater Chennai Corporation enforced a strict ban on plastic carry bags with a thickness of less than 40 microns.
