Hyderabad: 2.7 Lakh's cases against drivers

Reckless driving lands drivers in cops' net.

Hyderabad: Statistics reveal that this year till July around 2,79,233 cases were booked under various sections against lorry drivers. Of the total number, 2,642 cases were booked for reckless driving and 1,884 cases were lodged for driving without proper documents in Cyberabad.

The errant driving of truck drivers has resulted in many deaths recently.

Additionally, they travel with an overload and without proper infrastructure. Due to that there are many instances where roads have been damaged.

However, a member of the lorry association said that they could not blame only lorry drivers for the damages caused to roads. He was a small part of the organised system. It was also the fault of the factory owner who was overloading the vehicle and the concerned authorities, the association member said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Cyberabad, S.M Vijay said, “We have been conducting awareness programs and special drives to curb the menace of dangerous driving and booking cases on them under relevant sections. We are trying our best.”

Telangana Lorry Owners Association working president, M. Rajendar Reddy said, “All overload driving cases fall under dangerous driving. The police are only arresting innocent people like drivers and booking cases against them. They are not arresting the contractor who encouraged or forced the lorry driver to drive the vehicle with an overload.”

“If there is an accident where a lorry is involved, although the mistake may be due to the other vehicle's driver, the police will end up arresting the lorry driver,” Reddy said.

However, when asked why lorry drivers keep travelling without proper documents which were the second highest violation,

Reddy said they barely survived on their earnings so some could not pay their taxes properly. Therefore they failed to furnish the documents to the authorities.
