Karnataka: Gaming an emerging sector, says Priyank Kharge

Details of the Karnataka Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics Policy, recently approved by the Cabinet, were unveiled on Wednesday.

Bengaluru: “Karnataka is the first state to recognise animation and gaming as an emerging sector and to announce a dedicated policy, Karnataka Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics (KAVGC). Our aim now is to make Bengaluru the creative capital of the world! We will nurture the ecosystem to churn original IP locally, with global resonance. We believe if the policy is executed effectively and efficiently, the sector will be able to create the maximum number of jobs in the future,” said IT-BT and Tourism Minister Priyank Kharge at the Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics (AVGC) industry interaction meet held on Wednesday by the Department of Information Technology, Biotechnology.

Details of the Karnataka Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics Policy (Next Gen KAVGC Policy), recently approved by the Cabinet, were unveiled on Wednesday.

Mr Biren Ghose, Country Head, Technicolor India, said, “The AVGC sector has generated 0.5% of the country’s GDP and we are now looking at escalating it to 2.5% by 2022 by remonetising the Indian media industry through a partnership between the government and industry leaders. This partnership will also help traditional media embrace futuristic opportunities.” Mr Gaurav Gupta, Principal Secretary, Department of IT-Bt and Science & Technology said, “We aim to accelerate growth in the AVGC vertical and help grow Bengaluru as a global AVGC hub. We will strive to provide continuous support to address any issues that may hinder the growth of this industry.”

The credit for Bengaluru’s current standing as a leading AVGC destination in the country goes to the state government’s foresight in 2012, making it the first state to recognise AVGC as an emerging sector and announce a dedicated policy, he said.

Some of the prominent industry leaders at the session included Mr Rajesh Rao, CEO, Dhruva Interactive, and Chairman, Nasscom Gaming Forum, Mr Nandish, CEO, Xentrix Studios, Mr Rakesh Mishra, V-P, Marketing, Target India, Mr Pradeep Nair, Managing Director, Autodesk-India & SAARC, and Mr Easo Thampy Mathew, National Operations Head, Aptech.
