Fate of 450 MBBS seats yet to get affiliation uncertain

As per the MCI guidelines, only two allotments could be done for medical colleges.

Thiruvananthapuram: The fate of 450 seats which is yet to receive the affiliation from the Kerala University of Health Science (KUHS) remains undecided even though the High Court on Tuesday decided to allow the third round of allotment.
These colleges are Malabar Medical College, Kozhikode, Karuna College, Palakkad, Kannur Medical College and SUT Medical College, Thiru-vananthapuram.

The HC has asked the KUHS to make it clear to the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE) the names of the colleges among them which can be given affiliation before Thursday.

Among them, Malabar Medical College has got a favourable interim order from the Single Judge permitting allotment.

Though, the High Court allowed the state to conduct one more allotment, it has not extended the time for completing the admissions process, which meant that the state would have to finish the admission process as per the earlier schedule on August 31.

As per the MCI guidelines, only two allotments could be done for medical colleges. However, in the state, the first round was restricted to government medical colleges.

The self-financing ones were included in the second round ending on Thursday. The third round will close at 4 pm on August 26. With the rank list published on August 27, students have got time to get admitted to colleges till 4 pm on August 29. However, the court verdict was clear that the CEE will also do the spot allotment on August 30 and 31.

This meant that the state government would do the complete admission process and the private self-financing colleges would not make admissions to vacant seats even after the completion of the allotment process. However, the fee for 85 per cent seats will be the same fixed at Rs 5 lakh.
