Thiruvananthapuram: CPM leaders visit houses to regain lost ground

The CPM leaders say the people have widely welcomed the party decision to carryout house visits.

THIRUVANANTHPAURAM: The CPM top leadership on Tuesday came face to face with tough questions from people on issues ranging from Sabarimala temple to University College violence during their house visit.

On the direction of central committee, top leaders of CPM including members of politburo, central committee, state secretary, state committee members and district secretaries made house visits across the state. The week-long programme which began on July 22 will conclude on July 28. The exercise is part of the party's plan to connect directly with the people and elicit their views.

"Party members have various platforms to air their views on party and government functioning. However, party sympathisers, fellow travellers and common man do not have an opportunity to connect directly with the leaders. The house visits have given them an opportunity to interact with us and give their suggestions," said CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan who visited houses in city.

The CPM leaders say the people have widely welcomed the party decision to carryout house visits.

The family members in some houses raised the Sabarimala issue and accused the LDF government of showing undue haste.

The CPM leaders tried to convince them saying that the government had no other option as it was the constitutional duty to implement the Supreme Court verdict on Sabarimala. The BJP and Congress took an opportunistic stand. Initially they welcomed the verdict ensuring gender equality and later they backed off for vested political reasons. Issues related to the performance of government and local bodies were also raised.

The suggestions and criticism received during house visits will be examined in detail at an extended state committee meeting to be held in August. Based on the inputs received from the people, the party and the government will chalk out the future course of action.
