K Muraleedharan walks out on bail

He was an under-trial prisoner ever since his arrest on May 8, 2015.

Kochi: K. Muraleedharan (Murali Kannampilly), a Marxist ideologue and leader of the Communist Party of India (Maoist), was released on bail from the Yerwad Central Jail in Pune on Tuesday. He was an under-trial prisoner ever since his arrest on May 8, 2015.

Although the Mumbai High Court had granted him bail on February 25, 2019 the legal formalities took more than four months for completion which led to the delay in his release.

A native of Irumpanam near Ernakulam, Murali has associated with left-wing militant political activism since his students in the second half of 1970s and is known for his scholarly works on changes in land relations in Kerala, caste and various aspects of Marxist theory.

During his incarceration in Yerwada, he had mastered Marathi and translated works of 17th century Marathi Bhakti poet Sant Tukaram’s works into Malayalam. The 66-year old Murali, a heart patient, has been granted bail on the condition that he report to a Pune police station on the first and 30th of every month.
