TIRUNELVELI: Former Tirunelveli Mayor, Umamaheshwari, her husband and servant maid, were gruesomely hacked to death at her residence at Reddiyarpatti here on Tuesday evening.
The murder is suspected to have been committed late in the afternoon, but it came to light only at 6 pm when Umamaheshwari’s daughter, Krithiga (30), who was residing nearby, came to see her parents.
The murderers are believed to have used crowbars and sickles to kill the three. Umamaheswari was found lying dead in the hall, while her husband Muruga Shankar (65) was lying dead in his bed room and the servant maid, Mari (30) in another room, said police.
Umamaheshwari, a DMK leader was the first woman mayor of Tirunelveli municipal corporation between 1996 and 2001.Her husband is a businessman and her only daughter, Krithiga, is a professor in a private college at Nagercoil.
