Chennai: Sand mound for toll gate work turns fatal for biker

22-year-old killed after he skids and hits barricade.

Chennai: A 22-year-old man died after his bike skid and he fell on Minjur-Vandalur outer ring road on Monday night. For once, irresponsible driving was not entirely to blame. Ironically, the reason for the freak accident was the heap of sand and stones left on the road due to construction of a toll gate. Sources said that the biker, who did not notice the sand, skidded and fell with his head hitting the barricade on the other side of the road.

The deceased identified as Kingsley Mandro (22) a resident of Valayapathi street, in Palliakaranai worked in a private company in Nungambakkam. The accident happened on Monday at around 9. 30 pm when he was heading home from work. According to police, Kingsley took Minjur-Vandalur outer ring road to avoid getting stuck in traffic on GST road. When he was on the road near Kishkindha amusement park, his bike hit the heap of sand and skidded. Sources said he was thrown off from the vehicle and his head allegedly hit a barricade.

Passersby alerted police and the ambulance, but Kingsley died before the ambulance could reach the spot.

People alleged that the ambulance refused to take the body since he had died. Meanwhile, police arrived at the spot and sent his body to Chromepet government hospital for post-mortem. Passersby and locals who witnessed the incident requested police officers to remove the heap of sand and stone on the road. Police officers said it will be done on Tuesday morning. Unconvinced, people blocked the Minjur-Vandalur outer ring road and staged a road roko, demanding that officials remove the construction material immediately.

Revenue department officials rushed to the spot and after they ordered the removal of the construction materials, protesters withdrew the protest at around 11: 30 pm. Somangalam police have registered a case and investigations are on.
