Protests may halt raids by tax sleuths

Over 3,000 non-IRS employees in Telangana state and Andhra Pradesh have joined the protests.

Hyderabad: Tax-evaders have got a breather as tax sleuths may not undertake raids for some time because of an agitation by non-IRS staff across the country against the long delay in promotions and pay scales. Over 3,000 non-IRS employees in Telangana state and Andhra Pradesh have joined the protests. “IRS officials get automatic promotions every four years even though there is no change in work. Non-IRS staff recruited through the Staff Selection Commission are not getting any promotion and payscale rise even after 14 years,” said a senior I-T official on the condition of anonymity.

“We are protesting against this discrimination and participating in the non-cooperation movement. There will not be any update on data and reports are not being sent to higher officials. Non-IRS staff will not participate in raids and searches until our demands are fulfilled,” the official said. About 100 IRS officials are working in TS and AP. “Without our participation, they can’t carry search or raid operations,” he said.
