Don't appoint VC for MKU till August 6: Supreme Court
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday restrained the Tamil Nadu government from appointing a new Vice Chancellor to the Madurai Kamaraj University but allowed the search committee to go ahead with the selection process.
A Bench of Justices A.K. Sikri and Ashok Bhushan said the matter required consideration and detailed hearing and posted the matter for final disposal on August 6. In the meanwhile the court said no new appointment could be made though the selection process could go on.
On June 14 the High Court set aside the appointment of Mr. Chellathurai while allowing a petition filed by M. Lionel Antony Raj challenging his appointment on the ground of violation of procedure. The High Court agreeing with the petitioner held that there is a clear violation of statute of Madurai Kamaraj University Act 1965 and, more importantly, such violation pertains to the selection process and procedure.
