Death toll rises in scaffolding mishap

Of the 28 injured persons, 16 are undergoing treatment at the private hospital in Perungudi and 12 are at Government Royapettah Hospital

Chennai: Two days after an under-construction hospital building collapsed in Kandanchavadi near Taramani, another migrant worker succumbed to injuries at a private hospital on Monday morning, increasing the toll of the tragic incident to two. As many as 28 workers are in hospital undergoing treatment.

The deceased was identified as a construction worker C. Rajan Chowdry (30) from Bihar. On the day of the incident, on Saturday night, another construction worker Bablu (23) died on the spot.

On the ill-fated Saturday night, the scaffolding of the four-storey building collapsed after the plinth housing generator crumbled. As many as 30 workers were trapped in the debris and Bablu died on the spot.

“Rajan Choudry was admitted to a private hospital in Perungudi,” the police said.

Meanwhile, the police have booked the construction firm under three sections of IPC including for being careless at work which led to the mishap. The police also arrested two site engineers - Murugesan (52) and Silambarasan (27), both from Chennai.

According to sources, a private hospital chain had been constructing the eight-storey hospital and had completed four floors when the building collapsed. Of the 28 injured persons, 16 are undergoing treatment at the private hospital in Perungudi and 12 are at Government Royapettah Hospital.
