Vijayawada: Rains have added to the woes of the residents of Revenue Colony.
The people in the colony which is in the centre of the city adjoining Mahatma Gandhi Road are facing problems due to poor drainage system and stagnant water. Negligence of the civic body is irking the residents with frequent rains.
The colony has huge commercial complexes along with apartments and residential spaces. The colony people are facing problems due to inundation. Rainwater is getting stagnated in the streets by around half feet and pedestrians are facing problem to come out.
“Blocked drains are creating problems during rainy seasons. A majority of the drains were encroached and the main drain on Park Road got stagnated with plastic wastes. Huge logs of trees axed by the electricity department were dumped in drains causing severe problems,” says Maganti Rajeev Chowdary, a colony resident.
Vacant lands in the colony are becoming hub for dumping garbage and construction waste.
“The civic body which is publicising on collecting vacant land tax is ignoring action against vacant lands filled with garbage. Water stagnated in vacant lands is creating severe mosquito menace in the colony and vector-borne diseases have increased. Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) is confining itself to burning the garbage which is further causing air pollution,” says Lakshmi Sravanthi Datla, a home-maker.
Rash driving by youth hads become problematic at night and a few minor accidents in recent time have highlighted the need for speed-breakers in the intersection roads across the colony. The residents are demanding to take necessary measures to take up plantation drive.
