Tamil Nadu government to take over Raja Muthiah College
Chennai: The state government is planning to take over the Raja Muthiah Medical College of Annamalai University and bring it under the ambit of the Tamil Nadu Dr.MGR Medical University, higher education secretary Sunil Paliwal said here on Sunday.
“The government is undertaking various measures to ease the financial crisis in the university. After deploying the excessive staff to various government colleges and universities, the government may take over the medical and engineering colleges of the university,” he said.
However, the fees for the MBBS and BDS courses are to remain at Rs 5.5 lakh and Rs 2.5 lakh respectively. Professors from the university said the college is being currently run at the loss of Rs 80 crore annually.
Assuring such deployment for only three years, he said it will not affect the job opportunities of NET, SET qualified candidates.
The state government took over the administration of the Annamalai University in 2013 after financial and administrative irregularities were found in the university that was controlled historically by the Dr MAM Ramaswamy of Chettinad family as the university was founded by his grandfather.
The university has run down from its glory days when it contributed to the Tamil Nadu education scene with students unable to get choice seats in Che-nnai would gravitate to the Annamalai University. Several sharp practices by the barons who owned the varsity led to a dilution of standards.
Corrupt practices in the marking of annual exams were also suspected leading to students of merit keeping away.
High capitation fees was another issue.
