Hyderabad Metro Rail in phase II but Old City still out

Authorities insist things have not yet been finalised.

Hyderabad: The second phase of the Hyderabad Metro Rail will also not connect to the Old City, particularly Charminar, the High Court and other important places. The first phase of the metro rail had also no connection to the Old City area.

It is also not clear if the Metro will extend to Shamshabad airport. In its draft proposal the State government mentioned two routes to connect Shamshabad airport one from Raidurg via Gachibowli, and the other from Nagole via LB Nagar and Falaknuma. However, it’s not clear whether this will stand in the final proposal.

In the past, too, the state government had announced that the Metro rail will connect to Shamshabad airport, but later the 12 km extension plan from Jubilee Bus station to Falaknuma to Shamshabad airport was scrapped.

Asked to comment on the metro rail route to Shamshabad airport and Charminar in the second phase, managing director of Hyderabad Metro Rail, N.V.S. Reddy said that phase two is yet to be finalised.

The second phase will cover 83 km. The first phase is nearing completion. A delegation that includes HMR officials is expected to visit Japan to explore financing and collaboration options for the second phase.

Sources in HMR said that the feasibility report for phase two is being finalised and will be discussed with senior officials of Japan Bank for International Cooperation and other potential funders.
