5,000 unauthorised holy sites in Telangana

Supreme Court is coming down heavily on state governments for not implementing its orders.

Hyderabad: There are over 5,000 unauthorised religious structures on roads and public places in the state — and over 600 of them are in the city. With the Supreme Court coming down heavily on state governments for not implementing its orders on removal or relocation of such structures, the government here has started a survey of unauthorised religious structures. The outcome of the survey will be handed over to chief secretary Rajiv Sharma, to enable him to file an affidavit in the SC in a week or so.

The municipal administration has directed all local bodies to survey unauthorised religious structures at public places. The reports that have come in from the districts till July 22, which are yet to be examined, revealed there are over 5,000 religious structures that are troubling commuters. The government is planning to seek a year from the Supreme Court to relocate these structures.

The governments in undivided AP had already missed several deadlines set by SC in this regard since 2009. The Apex Court took a serious view of the issue in April this year and warned that it will be forced to summon the chief secretaries of all states for failing to file affidavits on the action taken by their governments.
