THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The motor vehicle department (MVD) has decided not to register vehicles without tamper-proof high-security number plates from Friday.
It withheld over 1.20 lakh RC books of vehicles sold in three months as many dealers were using old number plates even after the Union government notification making it mandatory from April 1.
As per the prescribed standards notified on December 6, all vehicles defined under Section 2(28) of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 has to affix the security registration plates.
The plates have to be fitted on the front and rear sides and windscreens. They will have a number plate tag with hologram.
The onus on providing the “security licence plate, including the third registration mark” to their approved dealers is on manufacturers. The dealers will place a mark of registration on such plates before affixing them.
These number plates with a 15-year guarantee will have inbuilt security features, including a self-destructive sticker with the engine and chassis number. It will have details like registering authority, registration number, laser-brandered permanent number, engine number and chassis number.
The reflective sheeting on the bottom left of the registration plate will be laser-brander with a permanent identification number having a minimum of 10 digits.
Two alphabets indicating the name of the vendor will precede the permanent number. There will be a third registration plate, having a chromium-based hologram sticker that is self-destructive affixed on the inner side of the windshield.
The registration plate fitted on the back side will be fixed firmly with a non-removable and non-reusable snap lock system. The number plate affixed in the rear side will have two snap locks for enhancing security. The price of the new vehicle will include the cost of the high-security registration plate also.
