Hyderabad: State starves city MLAs of funds for constituencies

As many as 15 MLAs and 10 MLCs from the city are waiting for the funds from April last year.

Hyderabad: Constituency development work in Hyderabad has been hit by the delay in releasing funds by the state government under the MLA and MLCs Constituency Development Programme (CDP).

As many as 15 MLAs and 10 MLCs from the city are waiting for the funds from April last year.

According to the elected representatives, several ongoing works have been stalled due to non-release of funds for several reasons including the model code of conduct imposed for the continuous elections from September for the Assembly, panchayats, Lok Sabha and zilla and mandal parishads.

After the TRS came to power Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao enhanced the CDP funds from Rs 2 crore to Rs 3 crore for each MLA and MLC. The funds were to be released quarterly, or Rs 75 lakh for every three months.

As per the CDP guidelines, the MLAs and MLCs can allocate the funds for works like school buildings, installation of CCTVs and laying of CC roads.

BJP MLC N. Ramachandra Rao said that due to the non release of funds they have been facing pressure from the contractors to clear bills for the works which were completed. They are unable to sanction funds for new works even though their voters are requesting civic amenities.

He pointed out that the state government had recently released some funds to MLAs and MLCs elsewhere in the state but ignored those from the city.

He appealed to the government to take steps for the timely release of funds so that elected representatives can take up the works as per the people’s requests.
