Stopping dumping under Chennai flyovers

Greater Chennai corporation promised to bring in new projects that will deal with disposal of waste.

Chennai: With an overload of waste generated across the city, Greater Chennai corporation promised to bring in new projects that will deal with disposal of waste, but garbage accumulated under flyovers and subways remains unattended. Piles of garbage are strewn under flyovers and in subways in the city, which not only make them unclean but also irks pedestrians and motorists. Vacant spaces under Ekkatuthangal flyover, Tambaram Sanatorium flyover, Alandur subway and Mambalam flyover have become a temporary garbage dump in the localities. Residents and commuters complain of the foul smell emanating from heaps of waste dumped in such places.

“The area under Mambalam flyover is partially encroached and the other part of it, is a completely dumped with waste from the localities or passers-by. We have complained to the corporation, but nothing has changed,” said V Raja, a resident of West Mambalam. Subways also remain an unclean passageway, with garbage dumped on each side of it. The waste is scattered all over the place and makes it difficult for pedestrians to walk through. The place is even used for open defecation by many, say commuters.

“People have started throwing garbage and liquor bottles in subways, swept by workers and waste collectors,” said Shri Krishna, a resident of Alandur. When contacted, corporation officials said space under flyovers is being utilized as parking for commuters. “The places that are not used for parking in subways are barricaded to prevent dumping of waste. The grievances of people will be looked into,” an official said.
