Thrissur: The much-talked about Suresh Gopi factor in Thrissur did not work out for the NDA as planned. But, the actor managed to get 2,93,822 votes as against the 1,02,681 votes the NDA candidate scored in 2014 Lok Sabha poll in the segment.
The NDA had garnered 2.05 lakh votes in all the assembly constituencies that come under the Thrissur Lok Sabha segment in the assembly polls held in 2016.
Suresh Gopi had said during the campaign in Thrissur that BJP's central leadership, especially Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, were keen on him contesting the LS polls with a plan to win the segment which the party had put in the 'A Plus' category.
However, the actor who was brought in just two weeks before the polls could add nearly 90,000 votes to the existing votes the party had gathered in the 2016 assembly polls.
The only takeaway for Suresh Gopi is that he managed to come second in the Thrissur assembly segment, but there too, the actor was trailing by a margin of more than 18,000 votes.
The margin of votes between Rajaji who came second and Suresh Gopi in the third position is 27,634 votes.
But, it is interesting to note that the vote share of NDA/BJP has shown an upward trend in Thrissur with the tally of 1.02 lakh votes in 2014 LS polls and 2.05 lakh votes in 2016 assembly elections and now reaching 2.93 lakh votes in 2019.
Reacting to the tall claims of Suresh Gopi during his campaign in Thrissur and the punch dialogs like 'I am taking Thrissur', the winner in Thrissur T.N. Prathapan said that no communal and fascist forces would be allowed to 'take Thrissur away'.
