DMK wrests Pollachi from AIADMK

Sustaining with majority of votes in the consecutive rounds Shanmuga Sundaram had a huge leading of 51,666 votes.

Pollachi: The DMK candidate Shanmuga Sundaram defeated the sitting MP C Mahendran of AIADMK in Pollachi Lok Sabha constituency, polling 5, 50,905 votes in this rural constituency in Coimbatore district on Thursday.

The Pollachi-Lok Sabha Constituency of Tamil Nadu comprises of Pollachi, Valparai, Kinathukadavu and Thondamuthoor assembly constituencies in Coimbatore district along with six Assembly constituencies in Tirupur district including Udumalpet and Madathukulam.

C Mahendran of AIADMK, Shanmuga Sundaram of DMK, Muthu Kumar of AMMK, Moogambikai of MNM and Sanuja from NTK were the candidates who contested Pollachi constituency, while Shanmuga Sundaram of DMK-Congress alliance and C.Mahendran of AIADMK-BJP alliance were the main rivals.

Officials said, a total of 10, 76,314 votes were registered in this constituency which is 70.80 per cent; the counting started at the Dr Mahalingam college premises in Pollachi-Udumalpet road and postal votes were counted first.

From the beginning Shanmuga Sundaram of DMK was found leading, in the first round Shanmuga Sundaram received 26,991 which was 6,991 votes more than C.Mahendran of AIADMK, while Muthu Kumar of AMMK was following in the third place with 1,685 votes and consecutively Moogambigai of MNM with 2,082 votes and Sanuja of NTK with 1,386 votes.

Sustaining with majority of votes in the consecutive rounds Shanmuga Sundaram had a huge leading of 51,666 votes than C. Mahendran in the eighth round.

At the end of 22th round, Shanmuga Sundaram won over his AIADMK rival by a margin of 1, 73,359 votes; while he received a total number of 5,50,905 votes, the AIADMK candidate C. Mahedran received 3,77,546 votes, coming second.
