Vaiko applies for bail in 2009 sedition case

The prosecution alleged that Vaiko spoke infringing the sovereignty of the country.

Chennai: In a sudden turn Marmalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief Vaiko has approached a city court seeking direction to release him from prison.

Nearly 50 days after he surrendered before the XIV Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Egmore at Allikulam on April 3, in connection with a sedition case registered against him in 2009, Vaiko has approached Principal Sessions court seeking bail.

The Thousand Lights Police Station registered a case against him under section 124 (A) of IPC in connection with the speech made by Vaiko in the book release function. The prosecution alleged that Vaiko spoke infringing the sovereignty of the country.

The case of registered in 2009 and charge sheet was filed in the next year. Since then there had been no sign of trial in the case.

On April 3, when Vaiko surrendered before the 14th Metropolitan Magistrate court, the Magistrate was willing to release him on bail provided he files a petition.

Since, he has refused to opt for bail, the magistrate remanded him to Puzhal prison. Later, the matter was transferred to principal sessions court, which in turn posted it to June 2 after extending his remand and transferring the case to V additional sessions court. When the matter came up for hearing before the principal sessions court on April 27, Vaiko refused to move bail bond.

The court also ordered issuance of no objection certificate enabling him to renew his passport, which expired on November 12, 2016. However, on Tuesday, Vaiko filed the plea before the principal sessions court seeking bail. The matter would come up for hearing before the court soon.
