Two children suffer burns after toy spare bursts in Chennai

Police are in the loss as to what triggered the toy spares to burst and have sent them for forensic tests.

Chennai: Two children, aged 10 and 7 playing with spares of electronic toys near their house in Ambattur, suffered burns after the spares exploded.

Police are in the loss as to what triggered the toy spares to burst and have sent them for forensic tests. While one of the children suffered mild burns on her face, another one suffered serious burns on the left hand, police said.

The children, J. Anisha (10) and S. Varsha (7). are neighbours residing on Bharatidasan Nagar in Athipet near Ambattur estate.

The family of one of the girls runs a scrap unit and the girls had taken worn out spares of electronic toys from there. “They were playing in the ground with the toy spares when it suddenly exploded leading to a blast, “ a police officer said.

“The toy had apparently been thrown against a rock which led to the blast.” a police officer said. Neighbours rushed to the rescue of the children and moved them to Mahalakshmi hospital in Ambattur. “Varsha suffered severe burns below her left wrist while Anisha escaped with simple injuries,” according to a police officer.

Anisha was sent home after treatment at the private hospital while Varsha was moved to the Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital for further treatment. She is said to be out of danger. “It is not clear as to what triggered the blast. Some of the spares had battery too. We suspect it to be due to the heat. We have sent the spares to forensic labs for tests,” Ambattur Estate police inspector Vijayaragavan said.
