Experts hail change, seek job-friendly courses

On reducing the plus-2 marks to 600, Ananthakrishnan said “the change is meaningless''.

Chennai: While welcoming the syllabus revision the academicians and educationists also stressed the need for child-friendly syllabus and asked the government to focus away from the science subjects as well.

Senior educationist S.S. Rajagopalan said, “The syllabus should be changed according to the needs. It also needs to be changed based on the opportunities.”
“We are giving too much emphasis to subjects like maths, physics, biology which are important for medical and engineering admissions. There are other subjects as well. We need to enable those students to attempt competitive exams for posts like IAS and IPS,” he said.

“For example, if a student wants to become a chartered accountant the accountancy syllabus should help them. For history and geography students we can have a paper on general knowledge,” he said.

“Unemployment is rampant now. Vocational courses should be revived as employment oriented courses in higher secondary. The courses must enable students to enter into some job or another,” he added.

“It’s a welcome move by the state government. But, more than the changing the syllabus, implementing it is more important,” said M. Ananthakrishnan, former vice-chancellor, Anna University.

“How they teach under the new syllabus and guide the students is also equally important,” he said. On reducing the plus-2 marks to 600, Ananthakrishnan said “the change is meaningless. It is a mirage, the marks either 1200 or 600 will not make any difference.”

“Social development and human development should be the aim of the curriculum,” said P.B. Prince Gajendrababu, general secretary, State Platform for Common School System.

“It should be a child-friendly syllabus where the textbooks are not loaded with the information. Textbooks should allow the child to acquire more knowledge. It has to create the deep understanding of the subjects by kindling their curiosity,” he said. He also said the internal assessment marks will be helpful to the learning process and assess the learning outcome.
