Rare birds that warn of climate change need to be conserved: J Christraj
Karur: The Karur-based “Psycho Trust and Youth for Ecological Sustainability’, an India Programme of Germany-based ‘Terre Des Hommes’, has appealed to the Tamil Nadu government to establish a birds sanctuary at Kadavur-Ayyalur forest region in Karur district, to preserve rare pieces of several birds including Slender Loris, according to J. Christraj, director of Psycho Trust.
A statement by the Trust here on Monday said that a resolution to this effect was adopted at the ‘World Earth Day’ celebrations at Kadavur near here to create basic awareness on the climate change and to reduce the usage of petrol, diesel, and coal, among the people.
In his address, Mr. Christraj said as per the Inter-Governmental panel on climatic change (IPCC) 5th report, due to climate change India will be worse affected in the coming days and it is time to create basic awareness about it.
He said that ‘Slender Loris’ is an indicator species in the region and the health of the same is important for habitat conservation.
He said that the Ayyalur reserve forest in the Eastern ghats is an International Hotspot, located adjacent to the northern slope of Ayyalur hills and surrounding ghat sections in Dindigul, Tiruchirappalli and Karur districts of Tamil Nadu and this region hosts the most number of species of animals and plants in India.
“For this reason, it is also an environmental hot spot in terms of declining biodiversity, both flora and fauna, due to social and economic needs of the communities,” he added.
Kadavur forest is home to ‘Slender Loris’ which is declining fast due to poaching for medicinal and meat uses, killed by pesticide poisoning, deforestation, grazing, forest fire, road kills from roads that run through the forest and loss of trees and nesting space, he said and urged conserving this species.
