Chennai: Citizens of Chennai gathered in large numbers on the Elliot’s Beach at Besant Nagar on Tuesday and paid homage to the victims of the terror attacks in Sri Lanka. They held lit candles and said silent prayers for the innocent victims, who included several children and women.
Sister Stella Dhinakaran of 'Jesus Calls', Brahmakumari Vijayalakshmi, A Faizur Rahman of the 'Islamic Forum for the Promotion of Moderate Thought', besides Mylapore legislator and former DGP R Nataraj, led the huge gathering that included several IT professionals, students, business people and women.
Sister Stella spoke about the highly traumatised Sri Lanka, a beautiful country scarred badly by multiple events of violence over the years, and prayed intensely for divine blessings to redeem the land and its people from misery and lead them to a peaceful future.
Br Vijayalakshmi spoke about the power of love and compassion while stressing that the present-day strife in society was the result of people ignoring these vital factors. She appealed for replacing anger and mistrust with love and forgiveness while stressing the importance of peaceful co-existence of all religions and cultures.
Ex-DGP Nataraj called upon the people to be vigilant about strangers and to report to the police about any suspicious movement of people and materials. The society must remain vigilant to prevent terror attacks, he said.
