THIRUVANANTHAPURAM/ALAPPUZHA: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of a heat wave in the state this week.

Maximum temperature is very likely to be above normal by 2 to 3 degree Celsius in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kannur and Kozhikode districts on Sunday.

It is very likely to be above normal by 3 to 4 degree Celsius in Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Thrissur districts and by 2 to 3 degree Celsius in Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Malappuram, Palakkad, Kannur and Kozhikode districts on Monday and Tuesday.

Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) asked people not to expose themselves to direct sunlight between 11 am and 3 pm to avoid sunstroke.

People should carry a small bottle of water with them whenever venturing out, keep drinking water to avoid dehydration and wear light colour clothes to reflect light to avoid the heat.

Parents and school authorities should caution their students as they will be writing their examinations soon.

Women and child development director Sheeba George asked Anganwadis to reschedule their working time from 7 am to 12 pm, or 8 am to 1 pm to avoid the extreme heat. Some have closed down because of the harsh weather, resulting in stoppage of the supply of nutritious food to children from financially backward families. The new timings are meant to make sure the distribution of nutritious food goes unhampered, said Ms George.

Besides general precautions, schools taking students on excursions should be mindful in protecting children from high temperatures.
