Coimbatore: Rs 43 lakh worth foreign currencies seized

COIMBATORE: Flying squad officials overseeing election preparations seized foreign currencies valued at Rs 43 lakh from a 26-year-old youth near Ondipudhur in the suburbs of the city, on Saturday.

A team of 80 flying squad personnel are deputed for duty in the city. One team led by Sudhaharan in Singanallur constituency was involved in vehicle checking near Ondipudhur over bridge on Saturday morning, when they stopped a two-wheeler.

On a search, officials found Rs 43 lakh worth foreign currencies including US, Singapore and euro currencies, inside a bag that the youth was carrying along with him.

On questioning, the youth identified himself as Jeya Raman (26) from Pappampatty, who owned a money transfer outlet near the Singanallur - Upplipalayam junction, and has a head office at Cochin in Kerala. The youth had shown some documents and claimed that he was on the way to send the currencies to the head office.

However, the officials seized the currencies and also informed the income tax official. Further investigations are on.
