Kozhikode: Cattle row turns ugly as RSS workers stop truck
Kozhikode: The transport of cattle in a vehicle in a ‘suffocating manner’ at Kallode near Perambra here on Tuesday evening led to a series of untoward incidents culminating in alleged police action against BJP-RSS workers at Perambra station and injuries to BJP ward member of Perambra panchayat P. Biju Krishnan on Wednesday.
The BJP workers at first waylaid the vehicle and beat up the driver at Kallode on Tuesday evening. The Perambra police took into custody two BJP workers against whom a case was registered under section 160 IPC (for disturbing public peace).
Perambra sub-inspector Jeevan George told DC, “there were five buffalo calves in a mini truck and the BJP workers stopped the vehicle demanding that the cattle should be transported with more comfort. “In the recent past there were many such incidents in which cattle trucks were waylaid and employees attacked,” he said.
“I intervened to save the driver and also to avert a communal issue as members of another community started gathering in support of the driver,” he said.
However, the truck with the cattle vanished when both sides faced each other and the police tried to control the situation, according to the police.
The RSS-BJP workers took out a protest march to the police station on Wednesday led by Mr Biju Krishnan demanding immediate release of one of the accused and action against the SI, which led to a melee, according to the police.
RSS Vadakara region karyavah P. Sukumaran told DC that the police manhandled the BJP men who questioned the police for taking into custody innocent workers.
“It was a public protest against transporting cattle, including cows, packed in a truck,” he said. “The police official is known for his anti-Hindu stand,” he said and added that Mr Biju Krishnan was injured and hospitalised.
