Mangaluru: Reticulated Python, Indian Gaur Pilikula's new attraction

New animals are regularly added through animal exchange programmes.

Mangaluru: Indian Gaur, the Reticulated Python, the world's longest non-venomous snake, and a few other animals and birds that have arrived at Shivarama Karanth Pilikula Biological Park will be the new attractions at the zoo.

The park, recognised as a major zoo by the Central Zoo Authority of India, is one of the main tourist spots in Mangaluru housing various animals.

New animals are regularly added through animal exchange programmes.

The latest ones to join the Pilikula Biological Park are a pair of Indian Gaur (Bison), 10 pairs of Painted Stork, 12 Night Heron and three pairs of Reticulated Python.

As per the Indian Wildlife Protection Act, Indian Gaur is listed as an endangered animal.

Reticulated Python which is native to the Nicobar Islands is considered the world's longest non-venomous snake, according to Pilikula Biological Park Director H.J. Bhandary.

These species have been brought from Vandalur Zoo in Chennai.

In return, Pilikula has given two pairs of King Cobra, Whitaker’s Boa and Wolf Snake to Vandalur Zoo.
