Bengaluru: Expressing displeasure over the “appalling” conditions that have allegedly taken a toll on their academic and career prospects, students of the Bengaluru Dr B.R. Ambedkar School of Economics (BASE) took to the streets, calling for an indefinite strike till their problems are solved. Student protesters said the current examination system and lack of adequate faculty members have affected them the most. “We were told that BASE would be the Indian version of the prestigious London School of Economics (LSE), but we realised it lately that all were failed promises. Why are we given marksheets from Banaglore University, instead of those carrying an autonomous stamp of BASE,” asked a second-year student.
Another student said that four students were suspended by the management without citing any reason. “This is autocratic. The examination controller has changed the grading systems at least thrice during the last four semesters and we are always at the receiving end of such ‘Tuqhlaq-style decisions,” said another student protester.
Mr M. Lakshminarayana, Director of the Institute, said that the recruitment of 12 faculty members will take place soon and it has been approved by the governing council.
Additional Chief Secretary (Higher Education) Anil Kumar said that the statute has been approved by the Governor and students will soon receive marks card with the BASE stamp.
