Aero India 2019: RTO helpdesk for air show fire victims

Senior fire department officials attribute cause of fire to cigarette butts thrown on the grass.

Bengaluru: Nearly 300 vehicles were destroyed in a big fire at the parking lot of the venue of the air show in Bengaluru on Saturday afternoon. To help the affected vehicle owners, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) has decided to open a special desk at the Yelankaha RTO office.

Senior officials from the fire department said that the cause of the fire could be from cigarette butts thrown on the grass in the open field.

A senior RTO official told Deccan Chronicle, “Those who lost their cars in the fire accident have nothing to worry about. We have discussed the issue with the police department. We have arranged for a help desk on the Yelankaha Air Force Station premises itself. Also, many insurances company agents are coming forward.”

RTO sources said that the helpdesk will be set up to get all the information about the vehicles that caught fire. Owners can give their vehicle details and RTO will get back with the complete information in two days. The helpdesk will be continued for two more days at the Yelankaha Air Base. The fire, which started at 11.55 am, was brought under control and no injuries were reported. The air show was temporarily suspended once the fire spread and no plane took off from the airbase till the inferno was completely doused.

Government sources said that the Department of Financial Services (DFS) has been requested by the Ministry of Defence to open a special insurance claim cell to facilitate speedy claims for affected people in Saturday’s fire accident.
