Kochi Corporation issues ultimatum on hanging cables

The operators have been told to either remove the cable or to tag it properly.

KOCHI: In the wake of the increasing number of accidents caused due to dangerously hanging cables in different parts of the city, the Kochi Corporation has given an ultimatum to mobile phone and cable TV operators to remove the cables before March 15. The operators have been told to either remove the cable or to tag it properly. All unauthorised cables will be removed after the deadline. The Town Planning Committee chairperson Shainy Mathew recently convened a meeting of mobile and cable operators to resolve the issue.

“If the cables are removed randomly, it will cause inconvenience to the public. That is why the civic body has instructed the agencies concerned to either tag them to the pole or remove them. The tagging has to be completed by March and if any cable is found hanging after the deadline, the Corporation will cut it without giving any further notice,” said Shiny Mathew.

The Corporation has identified a few roads and areas where the hanging cables pose a threat to pedestrians and commuters. The areas are T D road, A K Sheshadri road, Market road Edappally, Thammanam, Palarivattom, Vyttila, Toch H road, K P Vallon Road, Panampilly Nagar, Subhash Chandra Bose road, Pachalam , S R M Road, Palluruthy, Thoppumpady, Edakochi Road, Fort Kochi and Kunnumpuram Road.
