Following the recent amendments to the Wakf Act 1995, the Centre has incorporated a provision to nominate two woman members on the Board. However, the government selected only Dr Sofia Begum, standing counsel of the Wakf Board.
The government nominated scholars Mallik Motasim Khan from among Sunni Muslims and Dr Nissar Hussain (Hyder Aga) from the Shia Muslims.
IPS officer Tafseer Iqbal was nominated from the government members category and Mr Waheed Ahmed, advocate, under the social activist category. Dr Sofia Begum was the fifth nominated member.

Mr M. Zakeer Hussain Javid, Mr Mirza Anwar Baig and Mr Syed Akbar Nizamuddin have been elected from the Bar Council, mutawallis and managing committees of Wakf institutions segments respectively.
After the formation of Telangana state, a separate Wakf Board was created in September 2015, which was being run under the competent authority.
Some persons approached Hyderabad High Court seeking elections to the Board and the court directed the government to hold elections and nominate members by February 24 and constitute it.
The government held the elections for members of elected category in January and nominated the five members on Thursday. The newly constituted managing committee will likely elect Mr Saleem, TRS MLC, as chairman on Friday.
