University of Hyderabad faces series of challenges for autonomy

The varsity is planning short-term courses which are in great demand for professionals.

Hyderabad: Missing out good students and faculty and coping with technological changes in education and skill-building were the major challenges that the University of Hyderabad academic council faced in the process of upgrading the institute to graded autonomy.

The process of graded autonomy required feedback from various departments in the university and also schools to understand where the university needed to improve.

With the UoH image taking a major beating in the last three years, the feedback stated that the Central university had to be upgraded to the lines of institutes of technology so that they could get good students to study.

In a bid to create conducive environment for students it is also important to retain good faculty and that was the thrust in the council meeting.

Professor Vinod Pavarala of the University of Hyderabad explained that the graded autonomy was towards building capacity for technology, high-quality research, industry-related deliverance of skills for the students and working out on new courses through self-funding means.

“There will be a new cadre developed in the university who will be research scholars and also the existing faculty which is doing commendable works will be rewarded in the form of incentives. The programmes of students are also going to be the same but there will be new incentives added in terms of scholarships for them too,” Prof. Pavarala said.

The UoH is also going to evolve short-term courses which are in great demand for working professionals and help them in skill building as well as knowledge resources.
