Kottayam: Nun expresses concern over her safety

The superior-general had warned that if the nun did not abide by the summons, she would face punitive action.

KOTTAYAM: Sister Neena Rose, one of the four rebel nuns who has been asked to appear before the superior-general at the generalate house in Jalandhar, is worried over her safety and said bishop Franco, accused in the nun rape case, was still powerful.

She said that she would go to Jalandhar only if the Missionaries of Jesus congregation ensures her safety during her travel from Kerala.

Superior-general Rejina Kadamthottu had sent her a letter on January 21 asking her to report at the generalate on January 26 to explain her conduct.

Sister Neena told Deccan Chronicle that the letter was an indication of the power wielded by bishop Franco, who is facing a criminal case for raping a nun.

"The superior-general herself and many others support the bishop and hence I am worried over my safety during my trip to Jalandhar," she said.

However, she asserted that she could not be intimidated by evoking the canon law provisions as the law of the land is more important than canon law.

The nun is among the four who were transferred to various places from Kerala.

Though they had approached Apostolic Administrator Agnelo Rufino Gracias to permit them to stay at the St Francis Mission home at Kuravilangadu, he could not help them.

"Though he presented our request to the superior- general, she rejected it saying she had consulted the senior nuns of the congregation on the decision.

Moreover, he was asked not to involve in our issue since the case is ongoing," Sister Neena said.

The superior-general had warned that if the nun did not abide by the summons, she would face punitive action.
