Hyderabad high court seeks Telangana reply on Disabilities Act

The High Court bench gave three weeks to file affidavits.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court on Wednesday issued notices to the Centre, the state government, the Election Commission (EC) and the State Election Commission to explain how far they had implemented the Disabilities Act 2016 during the Assembly election.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Thottathil B. Radhakrishnan and Justice A. Rajashekara Reddy was hearing a suo motu petition on non-implementation of the rights of persons with disabilities as per the Disabilities Act, 2016 and the orders of the Election Commission on December 7.

The High Court converted the letter which was forwarded by Mr M. Srinivasulu, president of the “Network of Persons with Disability Organisation” into a public interest litigation.

“Though more than 20 lakh people with disabilities stay in Telangana state, about eight lakh voters with disabilities are missing from the voter data due to which they lost their right to vote,” Mr Srinivasulu said in the letter. The High Court bench gave three weeks to file affidavits.
