KOZHIKODE: This Republic Day will be special for the inmates of various juvenile shelter homes in the city. A platoon of them (30) will march along with hundreds of NSS, NCC, Scouts and Guides and Students Police Cadets to observe the day at Vikram Maithan here on Saturday.
The juvenile wing of the city police commissioner's office, which has initiated the programme, has been giving preliminary training to 15 boys and 15 girls of shelter homes for the purpose. They are now undergoing their official training along with the other volunteer teams at the Vikram Maithan.
The city police has also provided the students white and white uniform. City police chief Sanjay Kumar Gurudin said that these children who are studying in classes 8 to 11 were given separate marching practice and included in the main march past contingents. For the last three days, they have been participating along with other contingents.
The idea was to put the juvenile children in a disciplined environment. "We have noted a change in the children, which is our motto. We will also help them mix in such an environment in the future also," he added.
This initiative is jointly done with the Social Justice Department, as a part of social integration and instilling self esteem and feeling of responsibility towards nation among the inmates, the commissioner added.
