Hadiya happy with Supreme Court ruling

Hadiya returned to the college in November last year after the Supreme Court allowed her to complete her studies.

Salem: Hadiya, the 24-year-old girl whose conversion to Islam drew the attention of the nation, on Tuesday expressed happiness at the Supreme Court refusing to interfere or investigate into her marital status.

Though the BHMS student, who is completing her house surgeon at the Sivaraj Homeopathy College near here, refused to entertain requests by media persons for her reaction, she conveyed her happiness and relief to the college authorities.

Hadiya returned to the college in November last year after the Supreme Court allowed her to complete her studies. Registered with her original name Akhila Ashokan, Hadiya was forced to discontinue her studies at the institute after a major row erupted over her conversion to Islam and marriage to a Muslim youth

“I am happy and relieved,” Hadiya was quoted as saying by a senior member of the college. He said the young student wanted her privacy to be respected and refused to interact with the media when it was conveyed to her that scribes had arrived at the campus to elicit her response on the issue.

The Supreme Court ruling came a day after Ashokan and Ponnamma, Hadiya’s parents, met her at the college campus on Mondayevening. Hadiya is staying at college hostel in Sooramangalam like any other student without any special facilities.

She will stay at the hostel for the next nine months to complete her house surgeon duties to secure the degree. The Supreme Court on Tuesday said the NIA could continue with its probe into the alleged love jihad case of Kerala but it cannot investigate the marital status of the man and the woman. It said the NIA can investigate them on other issues but not about their marital status.

The top court also said that the woman, alleged to be a victim of love jihad, had appeared before it and had specifically said she had married Shafin Jahan on her own.
