Step in right direction: Former judge

Various departments in the Central and state government worked tirelessly to bring in the legislation.

Chennai: Lauding students for mounting pressure on the state government to enact legislation on jallikattu, former judge of high court justice T. N. Vallinayagam said the government has taken the right move and as a result of the law, the case against jallikattu in Supreme Court would become infructuous.
“It is an extraordinary legislation and within shortest period the Act was passed by the Assembly in the country,” he said.

Various departments in the Central and state government worked tirelessly to bring in the legislation. The ordinance was passed by the Assembly on Monday.
Justice T. N. Vallinayagam said if any one wishes to challenge the Act, they could approach Madras High court under Article 226 of the Constitution. The Supreme Court would rarely entertain similar petition under Article 32.

He said the after passing the Act, the matter relating to jallikattu pending before Supreme Court would become infructuous. Now, the people could conduct jallikattu without apprehending future legal wrangle. He called upon the students and youth to come forward and conduct jallikattu with fervour.
