BWSSB relaxes Sewage Treatment Plants norms

Sewage Treatment Plants must for flats with over 50 units.

Bengaluru: Are you the owner of a flat in an apartment that has more than 20 units and worried about BWSSB's compulsory sewage water treatment plant (STP) norms? If yes, you may relax now.

The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board has relaxed its earlier norm and has ruled that apartment complexes that have less than 50 units need not install STPs. The BWSSB has sent a recommendation to the state government to make installation of STPs compulsory only for residential building with 50 and above units or buildings measuring 5,000 square meters and above.

In view of increased opposition from the residents, citing reasons like shortage of space and lack of cheap technology to install STP for apartment complexes with 20 and above houses, Bengaluru Development Minister K.J. George held a meeting on Saturday with officials of the water board, environment, forest and ecology department and urban development department to discuss the issues faced by the residents.

As an outcome of the meeting, the water board on Monday decided to write to the government requesting it to relax the STP norm.

Only new apartments coming up with more than 20 units after the notification issued by the Environment, Forest and Ecology department on January 19, 2016 have to install STPs compulsorily, the notification said.

The water board has given time till Dec 31, 2017 to install STPs. All those units which fail to install STPs within the given deadline will be slapped with fines. Further, the board said that the fines collected till now from residential buildings housing 20 units will be refunded.
