Bengaluru: Metro train curbs may cause traffic gridlocks

No services between I'nagar and MG Road from Dec 28-30.

Bengaluru: With BMRCL announcing that metro services between M.G. Road and Indiranagar stations will be suspended from December 28 to 30, city residents fear there will be traffic gridlocks at the central business district.

The train services are being suspended as BMRCL wants to repair some pillars near Trinity station that have developed honeycombs.

Though BMRCL had earlier announced that commuters travelling from Mysore Road Station to Baiyappanahalli will have to get off at the MG Road station and feeder bus services will be provided free of cost to reach Indiranagar station for their onward journey. They only need to produce their Metro card or coupon to avail this facility.

However, experts claim this disruption of metro services would motivate people to use private vehicles to reach their destinations and this in turn will increase traffic volumes on the road.

A senior BMRCL official told Deccan Chronicle, "We have no other option than to stop the operation because repair work has to happen at the earliest. Since we have made arrangements for feeder buses, there will be no traffic congestion. So it's only for two days and metro commuters will definitely utilize feeder buses. We are also in touch with traffic police authorities and will plan accordingly."
