“We could not identify the man in the photo the cops showed to us. We had never even heard of him. Sandhya had never mentioned about anyone like that,” said Shobha, a family member.

She was a sincere girl and was popular in her locality. “Kids and elderly folk, all greeted her when she took her dog out for a walk every morning. Sandhya was a friendly and she never got into any mess with anyone,” said a man from the neighbourhood.

Meanwhile, murder accused Karthik’s mother was heart-broken, sad and a little bitter after her son committed the horrific crime. “What my son did was foolish, but it was Sandhya who drove him to this level of madness,” said Karthik’s mother V. Urmila, who received a call from her son after the crime. She said she persuaded Karthik to surrender.

“Karthik and Sandhya were in a relationship for the last two years. He had told us about it. His affection for the girl was evident from the gifts like sarees he got for her. Her family now talks of good a girl she was, but had nobody asked her questions when she brought home a new mobile, the money for which was given by my husband,” said Urmila.

“Sandhya was also pretty fond of my son till about six months ago, when she stopped talking to him. A couple of days back, she called me and told me to keep my son in check and not to follow her anymore, she said.
