Rohit Vemula isn't Dalit, Andhra Pradesh tells Telangana cops

Cyberabad top cop said the report has been forwarded to the government, seeking its opinion on further action in the case.

Hyderabad: Cyberabad Police commissioner Sandeep Shandilya on Friday said that the department has received a report from the revenue officials of Guntur district stating that Rohit Vemula did not belong to a Scheduled Caste.

Mr Shandilya said the report has been forwarded to the government, seeking its opinion on further action in the case.

The Cyberabad police commissioner was addressing the Annual Press Conference on Friday.

Since Guntur was the native district of Rohit Vemula, the police had sought a report from the district revenue officials validating his caste.

Rohith Vemula, a scholar pursuing PhD in the University of Hyderabad, had committed suicide allegedly after he was suspended from academics and was expelled from the hostel in January 2016.

The suicide sparked protests in the university, followed by police filing an abetment of suicide case.

Another case under charges of the Prevention of Atrocities on SC & ST Act was booked against then Union labour minister Bandaru Dattatreya, University of Hyderabad vice-chancellor Appa Rao and three others.
