Madras High Court questions Amrutha on Sobhan Babu

Amrutha S said in the present petition, the petitioner wants to establish her relationship with late Jayalalithaa as her mother.

Chennai: The Madras high court on Friday raised a query as to why Amrutha, who claimed that she is the daughter of former Chief Minister late J.Jayalalithaa, had not sought for paternity DNA test referring to late Sobhan Babu, who according to her, is her father. Replying to this query raised by Justice S.Vaidyanathan, senior counsel V.Prakash appearing for the petitioner- Amrutha S said in the present petition, the petitioner wants to establish her relationship with late Jayalalithaa as her mother.

After his reply, the judge said, “This court opines that certainly, the averment is going to cause great concern to family members of late Sobhan Babu”. After T.C. Gopalakrishnan, counsel for Chennai corporation and government pleader T.N. Rajagopalan took notice, the judge ordered notice to Deepa Jayakumar and Deepak Jayakumar and posted to January 5, further hearing of the petition filed by Amrutha.

In her petition, Amrutha sought a direction to the state government to permit the family members of Jayalalithaa to cremate her body as per the rites, rituals, customs of Vaishnava Iyengar Brahmin community, to which Jayalalithaa belonged to within a time frame to be fixed by the court with due police protection to her and her family members at time of cremation.

In his interim order, the judge said senior counsel V.Prakash appearing for the petitioner submitted that Amrutha was the daughter of the deceased late Jayalalithaa and he sought a direction to be issued to the state to do DNA matching of her with that of late Jayalalithaa. Advocate general Vijay Narayan submitted that the petition itself was not maintainable and that there cannot be a roving enquiry in this matter. According to him, the court cannot as a matter of right order DNA matching of thepetitioner with that of late Jayalalithaa.
