Hyderabad HC orders checks on jails
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court on Thursday directed the AP and Telangana state governments to file affidavits on the steps they had taken to resolve problems facing juvenile offenders, women prisoners and their children and mentally challenged inmates, based on the reports submitted by the district legal services cells.
A division bench comprising Justice C.V. Nagarjuna Reddy and Justice M.S.K. Jaiswal was dealing with a PIL taken up on a letter written by the member-secretary of the AP Legal Services Authority.
The bench directed the woman and child welfare and prison departments of the two states to conduct field visits and submit reports suggesting measures to resolve problems faced by these inmates in four weeks.
HC seeks report on APAT
Expressing displeasure at the AP and TS governments for not honouring its orders on the AP Administrative Tribunal, the High Court on Thursday directed both governments to submit explanations by Monday.
A division bench comprising acting Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice A. Shankar Narayana was dealing with a petition by Mr K. Srinivas, an advocate, questioning the Telangana state government in not receiving the bills of the APAT for salaries and maintenance.
The bench questioned the advocates general of both states for not filing the report on the outcome of a chief secretaries’ meeting that it had ordered.
Not satisfied with the replies of the AGs, it said it was not proper for the governments to ignore an order of the court. When the bench prepared to post the case on Friday, the AGs sought time and the bench adjourned the case to Monday.
